Tynt Insight – Very Interesting!

TyntWell a friend of mine sent me over to tynt.com to check out Tynt Insight.  I watched the video on their front page and then decided I would go ahead and give it a shot here on MikeDVB.com.  What is really neat about it is that you can select an excerpt from any of the posts or content on the site and when you copy it and then paste it somewhere (like an email or IM) it will include a link to read the rest of the page automatically.

Edit: I did find that there is no way to selectively disable this feature which makes copying shell commands out of a blog post difficult as you have to edit each copy before pasting it into a shell session.  I’ve disabled Tynt until I find a way to disable it per-page but I am open to suggestions 🙂

  1. interesting, never noticed you put it on.. I have *.tynt completely blackholed at the edge ever since the product first came out (before it started being used widely, it was called Tynt Tracer)

NoScript actually completely automatically dropped Tracer until very recently (it used HTTP POST every time you selected text – spitting out giant XSS warning alerts) when they changed to HTTP GET

It would need to be a WordPress plugin where it would selectively put the Tynt code on a page or not – Scott Swezey is working on a Tynt WP Plugin (I do believe he mailed you guys about it) that should be able to do the trick fairly easily.

A majority of the posts I wouldn’t mind Tynt running on but for example the one about compiling Apache, PHP, MySQL, and MSSQL Connector from source would be a pain to use if Tynt was in use.

Yeah – I wouldn’t expect it to work 100% of the time especially being that it’s script based. I didn’t get any warnings however while using it – it’s definitely an interesting concept.

They actually provide an opt-out script for people to use that dislike Tynt, but you do need to opt out on each browser on each computer you use. http://www.tynt.com/support/opt-inout/

As for disabling it per post/page in wordpress, it should be as simple to unregister the callback that inserts the JS code in the footer. I’ll look at adding this to my list of planned features.
